The right size depends on how far away people sit and how much needs to fit on the board at once. Here is how to choose.
Start with the viewing distance
A useful rule: handwriting on a board should be about 2.5 cm (1 inch) tall for every 3 metres (10 feet) of viewing distance. The further back the last row sits, the bigger the writing, and the bigger the board has to be to fit a useful amount of it.
Sizes and where they fit
- 1' × 1' and 1' × 1.5': desks, reception counters, kitchens, a child's study corner. Good for lists and reminders.
- 1' × 2' and 2' × 1.5': personal office walls, shop counters, planning boards beside a machine or workstation.
- 2' × 2': a small office or a home study wall where you want a square working area.
- 2' × 3': the most popular all-rounder: small meeting rooms, tuition centres, staff rooms and home offices.
- 3' × 4': meeting rooms for 6 to 10 people, small classrooms, training corners.
- 4' × 8': full classrooms, lecture rooms and training halls, where a whole class needs to read from the back.
Classrooms
For a standard classroom of 30 to 40 students, a 4' × 8' board at the front is the usual choice. Smaller rooms and tuition centres often use 3' × 4'. Add a 2' × 3' noticeboard or whiteboard at the side for timetables and notices.
Offices
Meeting rooms are usually best served by 3' × 4' or 4' × 8'. Individual desks and cabins use 1' × 2' to 2' × 3'.
